The report, which examined trends in job growth and skills demand, highlights three key factors driving change in the U.S. job market: automation, AI, and an aging population. "The key message is that technology is transforming jobs at a faster pace than ever before," said Dave Treat, chief technology officer at Pearson.
The report predicts that by 2028, the U.S. job market will add 1.9 million new jobs, with the largest growth seen in roles supporting technology implementation and maintenance. This includes jobs such as systems software engineers, computer and information systems managers, and computer programmers, which are expected to see a 15.4% increase and add approximately 319,970 new jobs.
In addition, the report forecasts that the retail sector will see the largest decline, as roles adapt to e-commerce and the need for workers with logistics and warehouse operations skills. On the other hand, healthcare, education, and manufacturing are expected to remain top employers, with roles such as nursing, education, and manufacturing experts becoming more tech-focused.
The report emphasizes that employers must identify future skill needs and invest in upskilling their workforce, examining tasks that can be automated or augmented by technology to improve employee productivity and free up time for learning.
