Key points:
- Proprietary data is an organization’s competitive advantage in the era of AI
- Unstructured data is high-fidelity and provides nuance, making it crucial for AI models
- Synthetic data fills data gaps and enables exploration of multiple scenarios without extensive costs or risks
- Context is key for AI, and generative AI helps surface the right information at the right time to the right domain expert
- Data governance and security are critical in the era of generative AI, with new tooling like watermarking and confidential compute
I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Teresa Tung, Global Lead of Data Capability at Accenture, to discuss the importance of proprietary data in the era of AI. As a prolific inventor with over 225 patents, Tung is at the forefront of breakthrough cloud technologies, including the convergence of AI, data, and computing capacity.
Tung emphasized that proprietary data is an organization’s competitive advantage, highlighting the importance of treating data as a core asset rather than an afterthought. She explained that generative AI models are pre-trained on an existing corpus of internet-scale data, making it easy to begin, but they don’t know the business, people, products, or processes, and without proprietary data, models will deliver the same results as competitors.
The conversation turned to the importance of unstructured data, which is high-fidelity and provides nuance. Tung noted that unstructured data has historically been challenging to work with, but generative AI excels at it, and it’s essential in the age of generative AI. Synthetic data was also discussed, with Tung explaining that it fills data gaps and enables exploration of multiple scenarios without extensive costs or risks.
Context was identified as a critical component for AI, with Tung emphasizing that it’s the meaning behind the data. She highlighted the importance of generative AI in surfacing the right information at the right time to the right domain expert. Data governance and security were also discussed, with Tung warning of the new risks and opportunities that come with generative AI.
Finally, Tung advised business and technology leaders to start preparing their digital core for AI, emphasizing the importance of getting data AI-ready. She noted that without a strong digital core, organizations will struggle to drive data in AI-led reinvention and will be left behind.
In summary, proprietary data is a competitive advantage, unstructured data is high-fidelity and provides nuance, synthetic data fills data gaps, context is key for AI, and data governance and security are critical in the era of generative AI. By following Teresa Tung’s advice, organizations can get their data AI-ready and drive data in AI-led reinvention.
