Global Internet Alert: 2025’s Most Critical Network Outages Revealed

As reported by ThousandEyes, a Cisco company, the reliability of services delivered by ISPs, cloud providers, and conferencing services is critical for enterprise organizations. The company monitors how providers are handling performance challenges and provides a weekly roundup of events that impact service delivery.

For the week of Jan. 20-26, ThousandEyes reported 395 global network outage events across ISPs, cloud service provider networks, collaboration app networks, and edge networks. This represents a 20% increase from the previous week, with a total of 195 outages reported in the U.S., a 24% increase.

Globally, ISP outages increased by 7% from 186 to 199 outages, while public cloud network outages jumped 89% from 76 to 142 outages. Collaboration app network outages remained unchanged, with only one outage reported globally and zero in the U.S.

Two notable outages occurred during this period. On January 24, Lumen experienced an outage that affected customers and downstream partners across multiple regions, including the U.S., Italy, Canada, France, India, the U.K., Germany, and the Netherlands. The outage lasted 37 minutes and was observed to be centered on Lumen nodes located in New York, NY. Around five minutes into the outage, the number of nodes exhibiting outage conditions in New York, NY, reduced, signaling a decrease in the number of impacted downstream partners and customers.

On January 23, AT&T experienced an outage on its network that impacted AT&T customers and partners across the U.S. The outage, lasting 13 minutes, was observed to be centered on AT&T nodes located in Dallas, TX. Around 15 minutes after the outage began, the number of nodes exhibiting outage conditions in Dallas, TX, reduced, coinciding with a decrease in the number of impacted partners and customers.
