Oracle, a company that is often associated with its software, has a hardware arm that has been relatively under the radar. The company acquired Sun Microsystems in 2010, and since then, has shifted its focus from custom Sparc processors to using x86 architecture and tuning its hardware for Oracle software.
The company has recently updated its Exadata platform, the Oracle Exadata X11M, which is designed to optimize performance for AI, OLTP, and analytics database workloads in cloud, multi-cloud, and on-premises environments. The X11M is built on the latest generation of AMD Epyc processors, featuring up to 96 cores and 25% faster per-core performance over previous generations.
The X11M is optimized for online transaction processing, which is typically the stronghold of IBM mainframes. However, Oracle knows its software and hardware better than anyone, and experts say that if anyone can optimize its hardware-software integration, it’s Oracle.
The company claims that the data-optimized hardware components and data-intelligent software enhancements in the X11M allow for quicker transaction processing, accelerated analytics, and AI workloads by up to 30 times over the prior generation of servers. The platform can be configured to match current operational needs and is designed to be automatically scalable, both up and down, like the elasticity of the cloud.
The new X11M also features power-saving features and optimized resource usage, contributing to reduced operational costs. Additionally, the platform can be deployed in various environments, including traditional on-premises deployments, Oracle Cloud@Customer as-a-Service, public cloud partners, and Oracle Cloud Infrastructure, giving customers a range of options for deployment.
In terms of AI workload performance, the X11M offloads intricate vector processing to storage servers, minimizing data transfers and enhancing efficiency. AI queries can be up to 32 times faster, and optimized vector distance functions can improve query performance by as much as 4.7 times.
For traditional OLTP and analytics customers, the X11M supports up to 1.25 times more concurrent transactions and up to 21% lower SQL 8K I/O read latency. This means it can achieve up to one million write IOPS on storage servers for transactional workloads.
