How is the gameplay like?
I have been playing Black Myth: Wukong on my Windows 11 PC since its release on August 20, 2024(original date of this post!!), and it’s been WAY better than I expected, I mean I knew the game was going to be good, look at all the time it took them to release the game, do you know when they started working on this game? 2018!!
Normally, I tend to hop from one game to another like I have said before but Black Myth: Wukong has managed to keep me fully engaged. This game beautifully blends traditional action RPG elements with innovative mechanics, it is basically like God of War, to an extent.
You get to wield Wukong’s legendary staff, master a variety of spells, and transform into different creatures, all while battling through a world steeped in ancient Chinese mythology.
In Black Myth: Wukong, combat is intense and deeply strategic. Whether you’re facing off against mythical beasts in a fast paced skirmish or planning your approach for a challenging boss fight(be careful with the 1st white wolf looking like boss!!), the controls feel smooth and responsive. Switching between Wukong’s different abilities and forms mid combat is seamless, which is crucial for adapting to the diverse challenges the game throws at you.
One of the standout features is the world design, the designers used real-life scans of ancient Chinese locations like the Dazu Rock Carvings in the photo below:
Every area feels alive, with hidden secrets, complex environments, and enemies that demand different strategies. The narrative is woven deeply into the gameplay, offering rich storytelling as you explore and battle your way through the game.
The game also shines in its character progression. As you defeat enemies and complete quests, you unlock new abilities, transformations, and spells, keeping the gameplay fresh and exciting as you progress.
If you’re a fan of action RPGs or interested in Chinese mythology, Black Myth: Wukong is definitely worth your time. With its blend of intense combat, deep storytelling, and stunning visuals, it offers an unforgettable gaming experience.
What tips and strategies work best for me in Black Myth: Wukong?
I’ve been playing this game for less than 7-8 hours total, I will get more time this weekend but with that said, I did find some strategies that you can try.
First, mastering Wukong’s transformations is key:
Each form offers unique abilities that can turn the tide in battle, so don’t be afraid to experiment. Whether it’s turning into a small bug to avoid a powerful attack or using a monstrous form to deal heavy damage, knowing when to switch forms is crucial. Below is my current favorite transformation(I haven’t reached this level yet but by just looking at it, yes!!!)
Timing your dodges and parries is another essential skill:
Black Myth: Wukong is all about precise combat, and rushing in head first will get you crushed faster than you can say “Journey to the West.” Take the time to learn enemy patterns and respond accordingly, your reflexes will thank you.
When it comes to spells and abilities, don’t just focus on one. Wukong’s arsenal is vast, and some of the game’s toughest enemies require a mix of magic and melee to defeat. Use your spells wisely, and don’t forget to upgrade them as you progress.
Explore every place you can think of, yes even THAT place:
This isn’t just about finding loot (although that’s always a plus), but also about uncovering the rich lore and secrets hidden throughout the game. Plus, who knows, you might just stumble upon a hidden boss or two.
Lastly, patience is your best friend:
The game is designed to test your skills, but also to reward careful planning and strategy. So, if you find yourself struggling, take a step back, reassess your approach, and dive back in with a new game plan.
Pros:
- Stunning Visuals: The game’s use of Unreal Engine 5 results in breathtaking graphics that set a new standard for the genre.
- Engaging Combat: Fluid, skill-based combat that’s both challenging and rewarding.
- Deep Storytelling: Rich narrative based on Journey to the West, with well-developed characters and lore.
- Varied Gameplay: A mix of combat, exploration, and puzzle-solving keeps the experience fresh.
- Innovative Transformations: Wukong’s ability to transform into different creatures adds depth to both combat and exploration.
Cons:
- Steep Learning Curve: The game can be difficult for newcomers to action RPGs.
- Performance Demands: High system requirements may be an issue for players with older hardware.
- Occasional Pacing Issues: Some players may find certain parts of the game slower than others.
- Limited Multiplayer Options: No co-op or multiplayer modes available, focusing solely on single-player.
- Complex Controls: The variety of abilities and transformations can be overwhelming at first.
Black Myth: Wukong Video Review
* If you want a full review of this game, I would recommend you check out this Youtube video by a guy named GameVault HQ. In this review, the dude says the game has amazing graphics, something that we all can see from the screenshots above and below this paragraph BUT, he did say it also had some uneven difficulty, unclear navigation, and technical issues, either way, he loved the game and I so far, I am too.
