The proposed extension, dubbed "Incoming Call Notifications," aims to bridge this gap. The new API will allow developers to create notifications that are visually distinguished from other notifications, feature customized buttons (such as answering or rejecting calls), and associate ringtones. Additionally, the notifications will have a higher priority than others, when supported by the platform.
The explainer introduces a new optional parameter, "scenario," which can be set to "incoming-call" to indicate that the notification is an incoming call notification. This allows developers to create a clear distinction between incoming calls and other types of notifications.
Microsoft has implemented a prototype of the explainer in Chromium and is seeking feedback from developers. To test the feature, users can use the sample app in Microsoft Edge on Windows by enabling the "IncomingCallNotifications" feature flag and following the provided steps.
