Key Points:
• Global internet traffic grew 17.2%, with significant regional variations
• The gaming industry surpassed finance as the most targeted sector for cyber attacks
• Post-quantum encryption reached 13% of TLS 1.3 traffic
As the world becomes increasingly connected, internet traffic continues to grow at an astonishing rate. According to the latest Cloudflare Radar Year in Review report, global internet traffic grew by 17.2% in 2024. This growth is not limited to a single region, but rather varies significantly across different parts of the world.
One of the most surprising findings in the report is the continued dominance of Google in the internet landscape. Google’s search engine and browser market share are higher than expected, with Chrome holding a strong lead in the browser market. Even on mobile devices, Google’s search engine dominates, outperforming the global average.
Another notable trend in the report is the persistence of the Log4j vulnerability, which continues to be exploited by attackers despite being discovered three years ago. This highlights the challenges of patching vulnerabilities, including complex technology environments and the need for efficient tools and resources.
The report also reveals the growing importance of post-quantum encryption, with 13% of TLS 1.3 traffic now utilizing this encryption method. As quantum computers become increasingly powerful, the need for post-quantum encryption will only continue to grow. Cloudflare would like to see this default support made available more rapidly, with browser platforms and server providers playing a crucial role in making this happen.
Despite the growth of the internet, there is no indication that this trend will slow down. From the rise of new content to the shift towards online processes, the demand for internet services continues to rise. As David Belson, head of data and insight at Cloudflare, notes, "While it feels like we may have hit an exhaustion point as we are terminally online, internet traffic growth rates continue to show that we have not."
