IBM has made a significant move to bolster its artificial intelligence (AI) data handling and storage capabilities by acquiring open-source database developer DataStax for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition aims to enhance IBM’s Watsonx portfolio of generative AI products, which is used for developing AI applications.
DataStax, a pioneer in open-source NoSQL databases, is known for its Apache Cassandra project, a high-availability system that allows server clusters to continue operating in the event of failure. This feature is crucial for generative AI and AI analytics development, as it ensures that data is always accessible and available.
IBM plans to integrate DataStax’s technology into its Watsonx portfolio, particularly for managing the vast amounts of unstructured data used in generative AI application development. Thousands of organizations, including FedEx, Capital One, The Home Depot, and Verizon, already use Apache Cassandra, which is renowned for its scalability, availability, fault tolerance, high performance, and multi-data-center, and hybrid cloud support.
The acquisition is significant because it highlights the growing importance of open-source tools and technologies in harnessing unstructured data for generative AI. "Businesses cannot realize the full potential of generative AI without the right infrastructure – open-source tools and technologies that empower developers, harness unstructured data, and provide a strong foundation for AI applications," said Dinesh Nirmal, senior vice president of IBM Software.
DataStax’s technology will also be integrated with IBM’s Langflow, a low-code, open-source app builder for retrieval augmented generation (RAG) and multi-agent AI applications. Langflow is a Python-based, model-, API-, and database-agnostic platform that adds flexible middleware capabilities to IBM’s Watsonx.ai, the integrated, end-to-end AI development studio for building generative AI applications.
The acquisition is expected to close in the second quarter of 2025. As the deal is awaiting completion, it remains to be seen how it will impact the competitive landscape, particularly in the face of other large database vendors such as Oracle and MongoDB, and cloud vendors such as Amazon, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure, with whom DataStax has development partnerships. Nevertheless, the acquisition marks a significant milestone in IBM’s efforts to strengthen its AI capabilities and solidify its position in the rapidly evolving landscape of AI development.
