Microsoft Photos App Update Rolls Out to Windows Insiders
Microsoft has started rolling out an update to the Microsoft Photos app, bringing a range of new features and improvements to Windows Insiders on Windows 11 and Windows 10. The update is currently being made available to Insiders on the Release Preview Channel of Windows 10 and all Insider channels on Windows 11.
OCR and Search in Web
One of the most notable new features in the update is the inclusion of Optical Character Recognition (OCR) technology, which can recognize text in images. Users can activate the OCR feature by clicking the "Scan Text" button in the Photos Viewer, which will highlight the recognized text with an overlay. The app will also include a "Search in Web" feature, allowing users to quickly search for any selected text online.
Quick Access to AI Editing and Visual Search
The update also introduces new File Explorer shortcuts that give users direct access to AI editing and visual search tools without needing to open the Photos app. Users can right-click on an image in File Explorer and select options such as "Create with Designer" to add rich text, adjust composition, or enhance colors.
Show Subfolder Images and Videos
The Photos Gallery will also gain a new feature, allowing users to show subfolder images and videos by enabling the "Show subfolders" filter option. This will provide a richer navigation experience and allow users to access more content.
Copilot Button and Other Improvements
The update also includes the introduction of the Copilot button in the Photos app, which brings AI directly to users’ fingertips. The Copilot button provides access to a range of AI-driven tools, including photo editing tips, image insights, and framing suggestions.
Bug Fixes and Improvements
The update also includes a range of bug fixes and improvements, including support for JXL files, bug fixes for the Image Creator and Restyle Image features, and improved overall quality and performance.
Getting the Update
To access these new features, users can update their app to version 2025.11030.20006.0 or higher via the Microsoft Store. The update is currently rolling out, so it may not be available right away. Microsoft is encouraging users to share their feedback on the update via the Feedback Hub.
