Microsoft Unveils Next-Gen Windows 11 Bites

• Windows 11 Insider Preview Build 27788 is now available in the Canary Channel.
• This build includes the first public preview of Windows MIDI Services, a complete rewrite of MIDI on Windows with a focus on a great experience for musicians and a strong foundation for future expansion and enhancement.
• A new USB MIDI 2.0 Class Driver is also available, providing high-speed USB MIDI support for both new USB MIDI 2.0 devices and class-compliant USB MIDI 1.0 devices.

Windows MIDI Services Public Preview:

Microsoft is excited to release the first public preview of Windows MIDI Services, a complete rewrite of MIDI on Windows designed for musicians and with a focus on future expansion and enhancement. This new MIDI stack offers several benefits, including:

  • Full support for the MIDI 2.0 standard, including high-speed data transmission, higher-fidelity messages, and increased resolution for controller values.
  • Faster transports for better timing and reduced jitter.
  • Faster USB MIDI driver support for both MIDI 1.0 and MIDI 2.0.
  • Multi-client support for every endpoint, allowing multiple apps to use a device at the same time.
  • Improved endpoint and port management.
  • Automatic translation between MIDI 1.0 and MIDI 2.0 based on API, application, and device needs.
  • More device metadata available to applications.
  • Better device add/remove/update notifications.
  • Backwards compatibility with the WinMM (MME) MIDI 1.0 API.

New USB MIDI 2.0 Class Driver:

A new USB MIDI 2.0 Class Driver is available, graciously provided by AMEI (Association of Musical Electronics Industry of Japan) and written by AmeNote. This driver supports both new USB MIDI 2.0 devices and class-compliant USB MIDI 1.0 devices.
