What is NBA 2K25 About?

NBA 2K25 is the latest installment in the NBA 2K series, released in September 2024. This version marks the first time the New Gen experience is available on PC, bringing upgraded graphics, new gameplay mechanics, and enhanced modes. Players can relive or reshape NBA history with MyNBA Eras, featuring the all-new Steph Era mode that lets fans explore the 2017 Golden State Warriors’ legacy.

NBA 2K25 includes a diverse range of gameplay options, from the popular MyCAREER and MyTEAM modes to the expansive open-world environment of The City. The game also introduces the Learn 2K mode, designed to help players of all levels master the game’s mechanics, whether it’s basic dribbling or advanced moves powered by ProPLAY technology.

NBA 2K25 Features:

How is the gameplay like?

I’ve been diving into NBA 2K25 on my PC, and let me tell you, it’s been a much better than game than I thought, so far. I was already pretty excited about the new features, but actually getting to play with the upgraded ProPLAY  dribble engine was a whole new level.

You can really feel the difference when your player’s movements sync with real NBA footage; like, it almost feels like I’m controlling the actual players. One moment I’m pulling off a smooth step-back 3 with Steph Curry, and the next, I’m completely botching a layup (thanks to my amazing timing, of course).

What I really enjoy is the new defensive mechanics. You can literally feel the tension when you’re trying to shut down a fast break; it’s not just button-mashing anymore, you’ve got to think ahead. The dynamic cutoff system lets you slide into position with the right stick, and I’ve had way too much fun blocking shots right at the last second.

And then there’s the learning curve. NBA 2K25 introduces the Learn 2K mode(it’s not really new), which is like having a personal coach without the judgmental stares.

From basic dribbling to mastering those tricky combo moves, this mode breaks it down in a way that even my clumsy thumbs can understand (most of the time, anyway).

Graphically, the game is stunning. I’m running it on a pretty decent custom PC (if anyone is interested to know what I have in my PC, leave a comment or contact me), and the visuals don’t disappoint.

The City looks more alive, the courts are vibrant, and with all the lighting effects cranked up, the game almost has you forgetting you’re playing a video game, until you get dunked on by your little cousin(it happens!!), reminding you that no amount of graphics can make up for skill.

What tips and strategies work best for me in NBA 2K25?

Alright, so I’ve been playing NBA 2K for what feels like forever, and NBA 2K25 has its own little quirks that can turn a good game into a great one. First off, one thing I’ve learned is to make the most of the new ProPLAY dribble engine.

This year’s game really rewards those who can handle the rock like a pro. Whether you’re driving to the hoop or creating space on the perimeter, mastering dribble moves like crossovers and hesitations can seriously throw off defenders and set you up for clean looks.

Effective Pick-and-Roll Use:

One of my go-to strategies is using pick-and-rolls. This might sound basic, but trust me, the AI is much smarter this year, and just spamming pick-and-rolls won’t cut it. You’ve got to mix up your approach: use the pick, fake the drive, and pull up for a mid-range jumper or kick it out to the corner for an open three. Timing and reading the defense is everything—don’t rush it, or you’ll get trapped easily.

Lock Down with Defense:

Another tip is to focus on defense. I know, I know, defense isn’t as fun as draining threes, but NBA 2K25’s new defensive cutoff system makes on-ball defense feel more responsive and rewarding. Anticipate your opponent’s moves and cut them off before they can get into the paint.

I’ve found that playing as a help defender and quickly switching between players can really disrupt their rhythm. It’s all about being proactive rather than reactive.

Shot Canceling Moves:

If you really want to up your game, get comfortable with the new Shot Canceling feature. It’s a lifesaver when you realize mid-air that your shot is about to get blocked or heavily contested. By canceling your shot, you can pivot into another move like a pass or a quick layup.

This feature is especially useful when playing against tougher defenses where space is at a premium. It’s all about keeping your options open and reacting to what the defense gives you. Don’t be afraid to experiment with it during practice; it’s one of those tools that, once mastered, can really make you unpredictable on the court.

BONUS: Step-Back Jumper for the Win!?

Now, for scoring, my absolute favorite move has to be the step-back jumper, especially coming off a screen but I have no problem taking on a defender 1 on 1 if he manages to get the screen or if he or she is just a great defender and sticks to me. As you’ll see in the GIF below, there’s nothing more satisfying than watching Tatum step back after freezing his man and draining a three.

(I will update this post to add the GIF, we are having a bit of an issue uploading it, smh!)

It’s all about timing your dribble moves and keeping the defender on their heel, you’ve got to make them guess whether you’re driving to the rim or stepping back for a quick release. Just remember, don’t overuse it; mix in some drives to keep your opponents guessing.

NBA 2K25 Video Review

*If you want a full review of NBA 2K25, I recommend checking out this YouTube video by a guy named SOFTDRINKTV. In his review, he highlights the gameplay improvements and praises the game’s fluid player movement and realistic animations, especially in NBA and WNBA games. It’s worth noting that he might be focusing more on the positives or playing offline modes, because from my perspective, the game’s heavy emphasis on microtransactions and pay-to-win mechanics makes it a frustrating experience for most of us, like him, I also mostly play offline modes (Play Now is my favorite), but if you’re looking to play online without spending extra money, you might end up getting frustrated, just a heads up lol!
