Microsoft-focused report: In a breakthrough move, the Linux Foundation’s networking division, LF Networking, has announced a major update to its L3AF project. The latest version, L3AF 2.1.0, introduces several significant enhancements that aim to simplify monitoring and control of large-scale cloud applications.
According to Ranny Haiby, CTO of networking, edge, and access at the Linux Foundation, L3AF enables deployment and chaining of eBPF programs. eBPF is an innovative technology that enables in-kernel networking and monitoring. Microsoft, a key player in the cloud computing landscape, is increasingly embracing eBPF as a critical component of its Azure infrastructure.
One of the major updates in L3AF 2.1.0 is the introduction of graceful restart functionality, which eliminates the need for shutting down the lf3afd daemon during updates and upgrades. This ensures seamless transition and ensures the eBPF programs continue to function at full capacity without interruption.
The release also introduces expanded container support, including availability on Docker Hub. This makes it easier for DevOps professionals to integrate L3AF with containerized workloads running on Kubernetes.
In addition, L3AF 2.1.0 now supports Kprobes, a Linux kernel tracing capability that provides integration with existing observability systems. This enrichment of data from the kernel eBPF programs provides a more comprehensive understanding of network activity.
As L3AF continues to grow, its community will focus on expanding its functionality based on real-world deployments. Microsoft’s commitment to eBPF and Linux-based solutions ensures that L3AF’s innovative features will likely be integrated into future releases of Windows Server and Azure. Haiby noted that while retail was the initial target for L3AF, the technology now has applicable use cases in any industry vertical imaginable. Walmart, the world’s largest retailer, has already publicly disclosed its use of L3AF for holiday sales traffic management and DDoS mitigation. The pervasiveness of eBPF support on modern cloud-native environments makes L3AF an attractive option for controlling eBPF programs in multi-cloud and multi-platform environments.
