How is the gameplay like?
I’ve been diving into Stormgate on my Windows 11 PC since its early access release(full release is/was August 13 2024) and it’s been a blast so far. To be honest, I rarely finish games because there’s always something new and shiny grabbing my attention, but Stormgate has managed to keep me hooked. This game blends classic real-time strategy elements with some fresh twists. You get to command armies, manage resources, and build bases, just like in the old-school RTS games we all love.
In Stormgate, you can choose between three distinct factions: the Human Vanguard, the Infernal Host, and the Celestial Armada. Each faction feels unique and requires different strategies to master.
The Human Vanguard is all about using advanced tech to rebuild and defend, while the Infernal Host focuses on aggressive, demonic invasions, and the Celestial Armada brings a mystical, almost magical touch to the battlefield.
The combat system is incredibly engaging. Whether you’re controlling a small squad in a tight skirmish or commanding massive armies in a large-scale battle, the controls are smooth and intuitive. Switching between different unit types and abilities mid-battle is seamless, and it’s crucial for adapting your strategy on the fly.
One of the coolest parts is the co-op mode where you can team up with friends. You can play 3-player co-op missions against AI, which adds a great social aspect to the game. Plus, the campaign is filled with rich storytelling and challenging missions. As you progress, you unlock new units and abilities, which keeps the gameplay feeling fresh and exciting.
Stormgate also shines in its competitive modes. Whether you’re a casual player or looking to climb the ranks in 1v1 matches, there’s something for everyone. The game does a great job of balancing accessibility for newcomers with depth for RTS veterans.
If you’re a fan of real time strategy games like myself or if you are Starcraft 2 fan, which most of you are, Stormgate is definitely worth your time. It’s got everything from intense battles to strategic depth, and the community-driven updates mean there’s always something new to look forward to.
What tips and strategies work best for me in Stormgate?
Well, when I first started playing Stormgate, I found that mastering the basics of resource management was crucial. You need to make sure you’re gathering enough resources to build and sustain your army, which means prioritizing your workers and keeping them busy at all times. Now, I have to admit, I love a good rush strategy—sending in waves of units early to overwhelm my opponent. It doesn’t always work, and I’ve had my fair share of embarrassing losses, but when it does work, it’s incredibly satisfying. But don’t blame me if this strategy doesn’t work for you, deal? Lol. Anyway, here are some serious tips to help you improve your gameplay…
Diversify Your Units:
Always make sure you have a balanced army. While it might be tempting to mass-produce a single type of unit, having a mix of infantry, air units, and siege weapons can help you adapt to different enemy strategies. This way, you can counter whatever your opponent throws at you.
Scout Early and Often:
Information is power in Stormgate. Send out scouts early to locate your opponent’s base and see what they’re up to. Knowing their strategy ahead of time can give you a significant advantage and help you prepare the right defenses or launch a timely attack.
Utilize Your Faction’s Strengths:
Each faction in Stormgate has unique strengths and abilities. For example, if you’re playing as the Human Vanguard, leverage their advanced technology for defensive structures and powerful long-range attacks. If you’re controlling the Infernal Host, use their aggressive units to keep constant pressure on your opponent.
Pros:
- Diverse Gameplay Modes: Offers a variety of modes, including 1v1 competitive matches, 3-player co-op against AI, and custom modes, providing something for both casual and hardcore players.
- Community-Driven Development: Regular updates and new content based on player feedback ensure that the game evolves with the community’s needs and desires.
- Unique Factions: Each faction has distinct abilities and strategies, adding depth and variety to gameplay.
- Accessible for New Players: Designed to be approachable for newcomers to the RTS genre, with features like the Quick Macro Panel to simplify complex actions.
- High-Quality Graphics and Performance: Built on Unreal Engine 5, Stormgate offers stunning visuals and optimized performance for a smooth gaming experience.
Cons:
- Monetization Concerns: Being a free-to-play game, there may be concerns about in-game purchases and how they affect game balance or player experience.
- Steep Learning Curve: Despite efforts to make it accessible, the complexity of RTS games can still present a steep learning curve for new players.
- Dependence on Online Play: A significant portion of the game’s content and enjoyment relies on online multiplayer, which can be an issue for players with unreliable internet connections.
- Potential for Meta Dominance: As with many competitive games, there’s a risk that certain strategies or factions will dominate the meta, leading to less variety in high-level play.
Stormgate Video Review
* If you want a full review of this game, I would recommend you check out this Youtube video by a guy named WinterStarcraft. In this “review”, which is actually just some gameplay tips because at the original posting of this post, the game is/was in early access so most reviewers wait until the game is fully out before giving a review of the game, nonetheless, WinterStarcraft made an excellent video that I think a lot of you will appreciate.
