As the Trump administration continues to push forward with its ambitious plans for artificial intelligence (AI) infrastructure, a new initiative has been announced, dubbed Stargate, with a reported investment of $500 billion. The project aims to create over 100,000 jobs and build 20 data centers, each measuring 500,000 square feet, across the United States. The initial allocation of $100 billion will be used for immediate deployment, with the remaining $400 billion to be distributed over the next four years.
Larry Ellison, chairman of Oracle, was among those who joined President Trump at a White House press conference to announce the project. Ellison highlighted the potential benefits of AI in the healthcare sector, citing the example of electronic health records and improved patient care.
However, questions have been raised about Oracle’s role in the project, given that the company does not build its own cloud servers and instead relies on leasing data center facilities. John Dinsdale, chief analyst and research director for Synergy Research Group, noted that Oracle’s strategy has not changed and that the company still prefers leasing over building its own data centers.
Rob Enderle, principal analyst at The Enderle Group, expressed concerns about Oracle’s ability to lead the Stargate initiative, citing the company’s relatively limited involvement in cloud services and lack of recent technological advancements. Enderle noted that Oracle’s recent focus has been on providing consulting services rather than building its own cloud infrastructure.
OpenAI, a key partner in the project, has also faced scrutiny, with ongoing financial struggles and a lack of clear plans for monetization. ChatGPT, a popular AI-powered language model, has yet to turn a profit, and its partnership with Microsoft has been called into question. A statement from Microsoft emphasized the continued partnership, citing recent contributions to the Azure service, but the absence of Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella from the press conference raised eyebrows.
Nvidia, a prominent player in the AI industry, was noticeably absent from the announcement, with a spokesperson simply stating the company’s enthusiasm for pushing the limits of computing. Another partner, MGX, an investment firm backed by the government of Abu Dhabi, has received a $1.5 billion investment from Microsoft.
Not everyone is pleased with the Stargate initiative. Elon Musk, a vocal critic of the project, took to social media to slam two of the participating companies, calling Softbank’s funding claim suspicious and labeling OpenAI’s CEO a "swindler." As the debate surrounding Stargate continues, questions remain about the project’s feasibility, the involvement of key players, and the long-term goals of the initiative.
