In a recent update, Microsoft is starting to roll out new features to Paint and Notepad for Windows Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels on Windows 11. The updates include significant changes to both painting and writing experiences.

For Paint, the company has introduced generative fill and generative erase tools. These features use AI to help users with artistic edits, such as adding intricate details or removing unwanted objects from a canvas. With generative fill, users can make edits and additions using a few words, and the AI will maintain the existing art style of their project. If users aren’t satisfied with the outcome, they can try refining their selection or text prompt. Generative erase removes unwanted objects from the canvas, filling in the empty space to make it look like the object was never there.

Notepad has also received an update with a new rewrite feature. This feature uses generative AI to rephrase sentences, adjust the tone, and modify text length. Users can right-click on the text, select Rewrite, and generate three variations of the rewritten text. They can further refine the output by modifying rewrite settings and clicking Retry.

Generative AI in Notepad not only rewrites text but also offers options to adjust content length, tone, or format. Users can customize their content for specific goals, and the feature also allows them to easily revert to earlier versions of their text.

In addition to these new features, the update has also improved Notepad’s launch performance, with many users experiencing a 35% or more improvement in app launch time.

While these features are starting to roll out, they are not yet available to all Insiders in the Canary and Dev Channels. Microsoft plans to monitor feedback and adjust the rollout accordingly before pushing the updates to the wider public.

As with any update, Microsoft invites feedback from the community through the Feedback Hub (WIN + F) under Apps > Paint or Apps > Notepad.
