Microsoft has announced the launch of Dragon Copilot, a new AI assistant for clinical workflows that integrates the capabilities of Dragon Medical One (DMO) and DAX Copilot. This announcement comes as Microsoft seeks to address the significant issue of clinician burnout in the healthcare industry. Despite a slight decrease in burnout rates from 53% in 2023 to 48% in 2024, the industry still faces a severe workforce shortage, making it essential to adopt technology that streamlines administrative tasks and enhances care access.
Microsoft’s corporate vice president, Joe Petro, emphasized the potential of AI to free clinicians from administrative burdens, enabling them to focus on patient care. He stated, "With the launch of our new Dragon Copilot, we are introducing the first unified voice AI experience to the market, drawing on our trusted, decades-long expertise that has consistently enhanced provider wellness and improved clinical and financial outcomes for provider organizations and the patients they serve."
Dragon Copilot combines the speech capabilities of DMO, which has helped document billions of patient records, with DAX’s ambient AI technology, which has assisted over 3 million patient conversations across 600 healthcare organizations. This integration enables clinicians to automate tasks, streamline documentation, and access patient information more efficiently, resulting in significant outcomes, including:
- 5 minutes saved per encounter
- 70% of clinicians reporting reduced feelings of burnout and fatigue
- 62% of clinicians stating they are less likely to leave their organization
- 93% of patients reporting a better overall experience
The new features of Dragon Copilot allow clinicians to:
- Streamline documentation with multilanguage ambient note creation, automated tasks, and more
- Surface information with general-purpose medical information searches from trusted content sources
- Automate tasks such as conversational orders, note and clinical evidence summaries, referral letters, and after-visit summaries
