Microsoft Mahjong
You Zhang’s design for the Microsoft Mahjong game, launched in 2012, draws inspiration from classic Windows 95 UI and childhood games like Minesweeper. Zhang found joy in reconnecting with nostalgic influences and merging retro with modern styles to create memorable designs that appeal across generations.
Cascading Solitaire
Yulia Makhmudova’s Cascading Solitaire design showcases the visually satisfying animation of Solitaire cards. Makhmudova, no stranger to classic Windows games, played 3D Pinball on her family computer as a kid and spent hours creating user profiles in Windows XP. Her favorite avatar was the fish!
Yellow Tulips
In a bold experiment, Makhmudova ‘turned 50’ by reimagining the original Tulips motif, legendary during the Windows XP era. The design features 50 yellow buds and a darker, more mysterious counterpart. Makhmudova had a chance to play with colors, materials, and new techniques, collaborating with fellow talented designers.
